We are so fortunate to have some brilliant Adjunct Professors in the School of Justice. Sandra Walklate is an absolute favourite of mine and I am so happy to be able to share our chat about Victimology. Sandra is a complete superstar and an academic pioneer. Sandra is also just a lovely human. Grab a cup of tea and settle in for this episode.

If you take nothing else away from this podcast please take away the message that you should always be kind to professional staff. They can make you look competent (or excellent.... or not so much), are in the know about what happens in workplaces, and I think we are all learning that how we treat people is more of a reflection on us. Maxine is one of those power-house professional staff who get things done and is always happy to help. Maxine's career path has not been so straight forward and I love her resilience and adaptability. These are things that make Maxine so great at her current job. Always be kind to professional staff. One day you will need them to fix some less than admirable thing you have done!

Brenna is one of those people that oozes stability and competence. Brenna has also had quite the few years of PhD, becoming a parent, and steadily excelling in the uncertainty of being a casual academic. Brenna's PhD build on her experiences as a child protection caseworker and we have some big chats about that. Full disclosure, I have the delight of being Brenna's PhD supervisor.
There is some talk in this episode about miscarriage and postnatal depression and anxiety. We encourage you to take care of yourself in responding to this.

What is it like being the youngest person in a room of stuffy academics - Dr Chataway lets us know. There are some clear strategies in here for finding and using your voice even when feeling intimidated. Also some excellent thoughts on fear of crime and violence in health settings. Good chats Chats.

In this episode Matt and I talk about things very dear to us - being queer. Is homophobia still a thing? What's it like to be queer in the workplace? How do we meet the challenges of 'representing' a minority? Surely homophobia still isn't a thing... right? Not all queers are the same as it turns out. This chat is honest and open and I really want to thank Matt for dealing with my difficult questions.

This is part 2 of a chat I had with my excellent co-producer Kelsey Adams. In this episode we think about what we do when we disagree with someone in a position of power, how we can respond to that, and expectations we hold in all of that. We also chat about how we process the emotion of someone saying things we just don't agree with. We talk about episodes with Kelly Richards and Danielle Watson so if you haven't already, go back and check those episodes out.

In this episode I chat with undergraduate student Julie Andrews on what it's like to return to study at the same time your kids start university. Julie also talks about chasing your dreams across a lifetime. Julie has a beautiful determination to recognise and work with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander young people. I have so much respect for our students and their care for community.

Caitlin has recently left us to join the University of Newcastle but I know a lot of you appreciated Caitlin for her storytelling, approach to teaching, and all-round excellence. I love it when I learn new things and in this chat I learned lots of new things. I don't think Caitlin actually failed at being a lawyer but I loved hearing her reflect on her approach to her career, finding place, and building community.

Kelsey and I talked for hours about research  and vicarious trauma [trigger warning for sexual assault discussion], being an academic, interdisciplinary perspectives, working with academics, and running away with the circus. The good news is you don't have to listen to hours of us talking and we've just pulled out the good bits. This is a two part episode so stay tuned for part 2.
